The Nagaoka area in the Amano River basin, where fireflies swarm in abundance every year around early June, is the only place in Japan where Genji Fireflies are found and has been designated a special natural monument by the government. Fed by the calcium-rich waters originating from Mt. Ibuki and Mt. Ryozen, the river basin is ideal for the growth of the black snail, which serves as food for fireflies. Refresh yourself with the natural coolness of the largest waterfall in southern Shiga Prefecture
This is the largest waterfall in the Konan region, with a total height of approximately 20 m and a length of approximately 100 m, including the stream. It is said that the name comes from the fact that the way the water flows down in three tiers is reminiscent of the Buddhist term “Kuhon Jodo” (Amitabha's Pure Land, which is comprised of different levels). Leave behind the hustle and bustle and heat of the city as you relax to the sound of the waterfall, which has been likened to the beautiful music of paradise.

by restoring the rice paddies’ role as a nursery
Some of animals that live in Lake Biwa have a habit of passing through the waterways and spawning in the rice paddies, making the rice paddies into their nursery. In order to revive the local scenery that has been lost over time, Shiga Prefecture advocates rice paddy cultivation that is mindful of the lives of the local fauna, such as by limiting the use of pesticides and installing fishways. Efforts are underway all over the prefecture, and the rice produced in these paddies is certified as “Paddy Field Fish Nursery Rice.”

Shinoda Fireworks

The wonder of fireworks in the night sky
in one of Japan’s rare fire festivals that still uses gunpowder
Designated a national selected intangible folk cultural property, this is the spring festival of Shinoda Shrine. The origin of this festival is said to be in the mid-Edo period, when parishioners who manufactured gunpowder for guns offered fireworks to the shrine. The fireworks are made using gunpowder, containing a mixture of sulfur, saltpeter and other ingredients, to draw pictures on large boards that then are used to create fantastical scenes that appear in the night sky.
